From the Wisdom of Abu al-Darda

Abu al-Darda, the eminent companion of the Prophet, peace be upon him, was known for his legendary compassion; he would cry if he were to see God's punishment falling even on the worst of disbelievers; his only wish was if only everyone were guided to the truth.

When Cyprus was conquered by Muslims, he sobbed bitterly; when asked, 'why cry rather than rejoice on this great occasion of Muslim victory?", he replied, "These were people, once powerful and dominant, but because of their disobedience of God, they met this horrible fate! How easy it is then for God to turn the tide on His servants when they disobey Him!!"
